A Wrinkle in Time was a “theatre for young audiences” play put on in the Forbes Center Studio Theatre, produced by the Stratford Players at James Madison University. The show was directed by student Kathryn Wevley and ran from October 30 - November 2, 2024.

The Ask:

Advertise Stratford Players’ production of A Wrinkle in Time to the students at JMU as well as the younger (children) audiences in the Harrisonburg community.

With strict copyright laws and regulations set forth by the author and publishing company, we had to think outside of the box to create content for publication.

Our medium for advertisement was the Stratford Instagram page, on which we hosted a social media campaign with graphic design, photography, and videography, accompanied by print materials.

The Challenge and the Medium:

The Creative Concept

Because A Wrinkle in Time was based off of a children’s novel and is a show meant for youth audiences, our ad campaign was affected in two major ways.

(1) The branding of the entire campaign shifted to match the tone of a children’s novel — something visually appealing and stimulating for adult and youth audience alike. This design included lots of stars and icon graphics. The purple leathery look of our poster and other designs were inspired by a storybook look.

(2) The content of our campaign was dictated by the addition of a youth audience — an audience that the Studio Theatre does not regularly host. Thus, we were tasked with creating a video series, documenting the people, space, and story that made up the production that the kids were to see. Additionally, this youthful target audience influenced the content that we put out to the rest of the school. Feeling inspired by the documentary style videos, we posted similar videos for the general public, and they were a big hit!
